Reflections on Cleverman

June 15, 2016 IHH Resident

A few of us have been gathering in unit 2 on Thursday nights to watch Cleverman on the ABC. Cleverman is a sci-fi drama with an 80% Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cast. It's set in Sydney in the near future, where creatures from the Dreaming, known as 'hairypeople', have recently revealed their existence to the world. The government has confined the hairies to one district of the city. The government is gradually moving them into detention centres because of a fear that they're responsible for savage murders that have been happening around the city. Like a lot of political sci-fi, Cleverman depicts a future which is actually a commentary on our current situation, with the treatment of hairies reminding us of asylum seeker detention, forced removals from remote Aboriginal communities, high rates of Aboriginal incarceration and police violence. Cleverman also portrays a future Australia where First Peoples have a strong presence and are recognised for their leadership by the wider society, but reminds us of the human tendency to find new scapegoats.
